Funeral service will be held Friday, August 1 at 1:00 p.m. at Sinai Temple, with Rabbi Reni Dickman officiating.
Visitation will be from noon until the service at the temple. Burial will be in Sinai Temple Cemetery, Michigan City.
Mr. Katz was born on November 18, 1914 in New York, NY to Harry and Ida Katz, the eldest of 7 children.
He married Estelle Schreiber, also one of seven children, on September 8, 1946 in Michigan City, and they would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary this year.
He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife, Estelle, his very dear daughter Kathy (Greg) Boylston, Ketchum, ID, sisters Bernice Tolchinksy, Michigan City, Naomi Fridovich, Sunrise, FL and Beverly Shapiro, Chicago, along with several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Sara Kohn, and brothers Isadore and Abraham Katz.
At an early age his family moved to South Bend, where he grew up and graduated from South Bend Central.
He enlisted in the U.S. navy the day after the Pearl Harbor bombing and spent WW II as a first class radioman aboard the aircraft carrier USS Admiralty Islands.
Julius was employed for 32 years at Interstate Industries until it closed its Michigan City location, and then at Inter Royal until his retirement.
He was a kind, generous and gentle person who was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a member of Sinai Temple and was involved in several community organizations including the Lions Club, past president of the B'nai Brith Lodge, the 76'ers golf league and the St. Anthony Hospital volunteer program.
It was through his efforts that the Hospital Red Coat program started. He loved fishing, golf, good music, his tomato plants, and visiting with family and friends. But, most of all, he loved when he and Estelle went to Washington Park to watch the sunset over Lake Michigan. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Sinai Temple, Michigan City, IN.
