LeRoy Francis Harpenau, 63, of Le Mars, Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at a Sioux City, Iowa, hospital of complications from Shy-Drager Syndrome.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens, Iowa, with the Rev. Randy Schon officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery in Oyens. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at St. Catherine's. A rosary will be said at 3 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight, followed by the Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m.

Mr. Harpenau was born May 25, 1934, in Le Mars, the son of John and Philomena (Langel) Harpenau. He graduated from Remsen (Iowa) St. Mary's High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He married Marlene Kneip on May 29, 1956, in Le Mars. For the next 41 years, the couple farmed near Oyens.

He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Wasmar Post No. 241, and the Columbus Club.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Brian and his wife, Tonya, of Le Mars; four daughters: Kathie Nelson and her husband Roger of Humboldt, Iowa, Kristie Hirschman and her husband Myron of Winterset, Iowa, Sharon Weiler and her husband Pat of Pella, Iowa, and Mary Beth Schorg and her husband Rick of Lawton, Iowa; five brothers: Robert and his wife Jeanette of Le Mars, Don and his wife Ione of Diamond Bar, Calif., Bill of Remsen, Ray and his wife Shirley of Remsen, and Tom and his wife Sharon of Enid, Okla.; four sisters: Doris Bergner of Lancaster, Calif., Vernell Chapman and her husband Jerry of Le Mars, and Margie Frericks and her husband Richard, and Helen Galles and her husband Paul all of Remsen; and 12 grandchildren: Kristin, Mitchell, Leann, and Garrett Nelson, Kathie (Malicoat), Carl, and Barbara Hirschman, Megan, Joel, and Katelyn Weiler, Amanda Schorg, and Madison Harpenau.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Chester Bergner.
