MONTICELLO...Funeral services for Ernest J. Schafer, 56, were held Saturday, March 2, at Goettsch Funeral home with burial in Oakwood cemetery. Rev. Harold L. Nagi officiated.
Mr. Schafer died Feb. 27 at Oakdale hospital, Iowa City, after a long illness. He was born Oct. 1, 1917, in Castle Grove township, son of Herman and Augusta Ortgies Schafer. He received his early education in Jones county rural schools. On June 19, 1940, he married Josephine Bruce in Anamosa. The couple farmed near Amber until 1953 when they moved to Monticello. He was a member of Wayne Zion
Lutheran church.
He is survived by his wife and four children, LaVern of Anamosa, Dale of Monticello, Mrs. Terry (Diane) Sparks of Council Bluffs and Tampa at home. Also surviving are five grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Augusta Schafer, Anamosa, and a brother, Johannes Schafer, Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers. Pallbearers were Alve Onken, Henry Ehlts, Cecil Bruce, Edwin Ulferts, Clifford Snyder and Leonard Fluckiger.
