Lena was the daughter of Peter and Catherine Berger. She had a ruptured appendix. She had been a bookkeeper.

Jan 27, 1936 - Carroll Daily Herald - Miss Lena Berger, 57, life-long Carroll county resident died at 10:20 o'clock this morning in St. Anthony hospital. Miss Berger suffered a ruptured appendix Monday evening and was removed to the hospital for an operation that night. Since then she had been critically ill and although slightly improved yesterday, little hope for her recovery was held from the first.

Miss Berger had been in poor health since last fall when she was forced to give up her position as bookkeeper in Waters Brothers store where she had been employed the past eight years. Since then she had been operating a fancy work shop in her home in the Morrison apartment. The body was taken to the Kircher-Dietrich Funeral home. Funeral arrangements had not been completed early this afternoon.

Miss Berger was born on January 10, 1879 at Mt. Carmel, Ia., and was the daughter of Peter and Catherine Berger. In 1892 she accompanied her parents to Carroll and Miss Berger had lived here since then. She attended the Ss. Peter and Paul's school and completed her education in the Carroll high school. Following graduation, Miss Berger lived with her parents until their deaths.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Charles Schmich and Mrs. Joe Wiedemeier, both of Carroll; and two brothers, Frank Berger and Will Berger of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mrs. Nick Wille and Mrs. George Schmich.

Miss Berger had been an active member of Court St. Rose of Lima, No. 6, Catholic Daughters of America and held the position of financial secretary in that organization since 1920. She was a member of the Ss. Peter and Paul church and also belonged to the Sacred Heart sodality.
