ANTON ELSHOFF, 72, ACTIVE IN CIVIC, BUSINESS AFFAIRS, DIES
Anton A. Elshoff, 72, of 416 South Eighth street, retired grocer and prominent civic leader, died at 11 a.m. yesterday at his residence following a long illness. He had been in failing health for some time.

Mr. Elshoff retired from the retail grocery business twelve years ago after engaging in the business for more than forty years. He was also active in public affairs, serving for a time as a member of the county board of supervisors several years ago.

In 1903, he was named by members of the city council to serve for three years on the school board, was re-appointed in 1907, and was elected to a two year term in 1911.

Mr. Elshoff was active in affairs of the retail grocers association and in other movements affecting local merchants. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen lodge and was a charter member of Springfield council No. 364 of the Knights of Columbus.

As a member of the Knights of Columbus, he took an active part in work of the Fourth Degree unit, and at one time, held the position of supreme director of the Western Catholic union. He also was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish and its Holy Name society, the Loyal Americans and the Lincoln Centennial association.

Mr. Elshoff was born May 27, 1867, the son of Henry and Frances Elshoff. He attended local parochial schools and later was graduated from Springfield Business college. He entered the grocery business in 1897 with his father in the latter's store at Eleventh and Cook streets. For a number of years, he operated a store at Eighth and Jackson streets, directly across the street from the Lincoln home. He sold his interest in the establishment in 1927 when he retired.

Surviving are his wife, Katie Morrison Elshoff; three brothers, Herman, Engelbert and Henry Elshoff; two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Gaupel and Mrs. Elizabeth Haas, and several nieces and nephews, all of this city.

The remains were taken to the Kirlin & Egan funeral home and will be removed at 2 p.m. today to the residence. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow at the residence and at 9 a.m. at the Cathedral. Rev. J.B. Franz will officiate.
