Judith's Will
Name Judith Stoneking
Death 1814 Pennsylvania, USA
Probate 31 Jan 1814 Bedford, Pennsylvania, USA
From a Steinkoenig / Croyle researcher from October 2004:

Hi Philip: some I can clear up. There has been some inaccurate
information circulating for some time which just will not die and it has
to do with Ali Quippa, Judith Stoneking etc. I was given this information
- probably what you have - many (now) years ago, took it on face value
but it is incorrect. I did some research - mainly two tracks. One was to
study the Croyle family hoping to find out the name of the immigrant
Jacob Steinkoenig's Indian wife (family lore, no proof but very
pervasive) and subsequent children. There turns out to be no
substantiation that Judith was part Indian - though in two county
histories the same story is told about Thomas Croyle, his relationship
with neighboring Indians and his wife being part Indian or maybe even
full Indian - meaning Judith. However, in the Croyle family history this
is not confirmed. Judith (several birth dates given for her in different
accounts and several different spellings of possible maiden name - sounds
German) was Thomas' second wife.

Thomas died and Judith married John Stoneking thus becoming Judith
Stoneking. Stoneking definitely was not her birth name. The marriage and
both Judith and John's wills are documented - I even have copies
somewhere. The Croyle family history is also well documented. I have
this in my files somewhere too - the copy I have is from the Bedford
County PA archives, Vol. 7 (I got a copy from Hoenstine Library,
Hollidaysburg, PA) and written by James B. Whisker. Thomas Cryle
(Croyle) arrived 19 Sep 1732. Married Margaretha Koelimer at Tulpehocken
12 Apr. 1741. Hx goes on to tell where he was and when, built a house
that still stood in 1991, etc. Was a Blacksmith. Documents tax lists,
etc. Thomas's will was written in German script - I have seen a
translation on the web somewhere. This history gives Judith's last name
as Creyelin. Tom's will was probated in 1800 and afterwards, Judith m.
John Stoneking. Judith died in 1814, John in 1813. No mention in any of
this history of Judith's native American heritage. Children are outlined
with their marriages and children, etc. Judith and John sold land to one
of the children in 1810 - documented. I also read some other accounts of
this family, again, no mention of Indian blood.

Aliquippa's age does not fit with any possibility of being married to
Jacob the immigrant. And, quite a bit of her life is documented -- no fit.

The other incorrect information has to do with Jacob the immigrant and
his family - children's names and wife's name. Again, incorrect. Someone
did some cursory research, found a family born about the right time and
with the name of Jacob Steinkoenig and just assumed it was the same Jacob
that immigrated. I connected via the internet with a Steinkonig family
in Mutterstadt, DE and then visited them several years ago. I first
asked them to look up this family that I was given to find more
information such as parents, etc. -- The family I had as the immigrants
lived and died in Germany as well as all their children - birth and death
records were there. But, Johann Jacob Steinkonig b. 10 Jul 1707 m. Maria
Katharina Royin 25 Oct 1729. She b. 14 Dec 1708. This family sold their
belongings and left in 1747 never to be heard of again. This Jacob was
the cousin of the other Jacob who I had been given as the immigrant.
Jacob and Maria had 8 children documented in Germany with the last one
unknown name and sex - could not read the inscription (not me, but Mr.
Steinkonig in Germany). These were:
Johannes (the younger) b. 19 Jan 1731
Maria Katharina b. 6 apr 1733
Anna Margaretha b. 18 Apr 1735
Johann Adam 18 Aug 1737
Ludwig b. 4 Jan 1740,
Johann Henrich b. 15 Aug 1744
unknown b. 14 June 1746. (my best guess is Samuel - only because no other
son is named after mother's father and that is a usual naming pattern -
he was named Samuel) Common practice was to name all the boys with the
same first name (Johann in this case) to fool the devil so he could not
find them.

I would dearly like to know the name of that last child and even if male
or female. I have done a search of the PA archives (and every where else
I could find) for Stonekings/steinkonigs of that era. The names match
well - Adam, henry, John specifically. there is also Samuel, Elizabeth,
William, Frederick and finally Jacob. However, Jacob was not born until
about 1765 or 66. There were already children born to the immigrant
children by then recorded in church records. So, it is not clear to me
whether Jacob of Greene Co. and rev. war pensioner is a son or grand son
of Jacob the immigrant. Most assume he is the son of Jacob the immigrant
and second 'blanket wife' Indian maiden - maybe 'summers eve.'

I posted the PA archives search and some of the church records on the
stoneking genforum some years back if you are interested in where and
what they are. Henry and family moved across the border to MD, was in the
rev. war for that state. Elizabeth is mentioned in DAR records in Women
of the Revolution and as wife of a rev. soldier. I think Maria Katharina
m. Jacob Matz - had children Elizabeth and Anna Maria (named for
sisters??) - this is speculation on my part but Adam and his wife are
present for some ceremony - can't remember what. Elizabeth m. Nicholas
Hogendoblen (many spellings - even worse than stoneking). This is
documented in church records and DAR records. I have tried to do some
research on this family, again, trying to find out more about Jacob the
immigrant and second wife - no luck so far. I think it would be helpful
to spend time in PA and search Lancaster and York county records. I live
in HI.

I also did some research on the arrival of the ship Jacob and family came
on - trying to find more complete passanger records as only the adult
males were listed. The family lore I was given had Maria dying on board
or shortly after arriving in America and at least one child also dying.
I did find in the PA records that the ship was required to dock out of
Philadelphia at first and be inspected by a doctor before allowed to
disembark passangers in Philadelphia because of illness on board - that
story fits. However, could not find any record of what the doctors
reported back or if any record was kept of who died in the crossing.

Well, I suppose your head is spinning by now. I may have left some things
out you were really asking - and repeated some things you already knew.
Could you let me know what your family line is - or interest in this
family. thanks,
------
These photos (photo now removed) appear not to be for Judith Croyle. She is currently buried under a road. They are for this Judith Croyle Note: Wife of Jacob Fetter, daughter of Thomas and Margaretha Koelimer Croyle. IE, her step daughter.

Appears she first married Thomas Kreul "Croyle" then John Steinkoenig (Stoneking). All three are buried at the Old Clyde Dibert Cemetery. At one point someone said that Thomas' stone was kept in a basement of a house near by. His remains are under the road.

There are rumors that Judith was the daughter of Summer Eve. We may never know the truth but there was an "Indian Eve" who was an "English" women who was kidnapped from Bedford County, Pennsylvania. The story can be found here

My great grandmother, descendant of this line always said that her grandmother's (Mary Croyle Ekas)side had Native American in her (they never knew who or how). Judith would be Mary Croyle Ekas' grandmother. My great grandmother, Jessie Lefever, passed this information down to my grandmother (her daughter-in-law) before she died. Update: a bunch of us descendants took DNA tests; ZERO NATIVE AMERICAN.

This oral tradition in my family is in line with other stories I heard from other Croyle/Ekas/Steinkonig family members.

Queen Alliquippa died in 1754 (born around 1670 which would make her 58 when Judith was born). Her story can be found here .

Her daughter (if she had one) was allegedly "Summer Eve", who might have been confused with the Anglo "Indian Eve" story. This was a woman who was kidnapped by Natives and eventually returned in the same area.

Judith and Thomas Kreull were married 8th September 1755 in Snake Springs, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

Their children:
Thomas Jr. 1760-1858
Carl 1761-1836
Richard 1762-
Jacob 1763-
Daniel 1764-
Eve 1764-
Infant 1766-1766
Joseph 1768-1840
Mary B. 1778-1851

I am searching for information on Stoneking/ Frakes connections.

John Stoneking, born 1750 married Judith Frakes, December 18, 1792 in Bedford County, PA.

Another researcher had this additional information on this couple. They had two children; a son Joseph Cecil and a daughter who married John Eackey.

On GenCircles there is a very good family history of Thomas Croyle who also married a Judith (some say Stoneking and others say Creyelin). They had a son named Joseph and a daughter who married John Ickey. These were their last two children. Judith named these two in her will. These children sound so simular.

The will of John Stoneking that married Judith, the widow of Thomas Croyle was probated on April 12, 1813 in Bedford Co., PA. The John Stoneking who married Judith Frakes died April 10, 1813 in Bedford Co., PA.

Does anyone have any addtional information on these people?

I also have a Uriah Stoneking born 1830 that married a ? Frakes.

Would appreciate any help. Thanks."
