After being for a time with his father, ex-Provost Bruce went to London as a journeyman. A few years afterwards, he emigrated to America where he engaged in farming. (...) In 1837, he returned to this country, married an English lady who had a business in Aberdeen as a confectioner. Mr John Bruce of Fornet, having started the agency for the Town and County Bank in Oldmeldrum, afterwards assumed his brother James as joint agent, and on the retiral of the former a year or two subsequently, ex-Provost Bruce became the sole agent. He also carried on his father's business which had been made over to him, and conducted it very successfully. Mr Bruce was the first Provost of Oldmeldrum".
He married four times (Honor Bailey, Christina Mennie, Mary Cooper, Agnes Yull) and had nine children.

Sacred to the memory of JAMES BRUCE & MARGARET MOIR the parents of James Bruce, Bank Agent, Old Meldrum and his three wives HONORA BAILEY, CHRISTINA MENNIE and MARY COOPER likewise their seven children died in infancy; also his eldest son JAMES died and was interred in Shanghai, China; said JAMES BRUCE d Old Meldrum 19 May 1902 aged 86; dau ISABELLA DIED 21 Jul 1928 aged 77.
