María Modesta Castro y Castro was born at Mission San Juan Bautista, Alta California, México, July 23, 1842. She was baptized at the Monterey Presidio Chapel (San Carlos) February 23, 1845 (SC Baptism 04452). She was the daughter of José Castro y Alvarez (SLD Baptism 01329) and María Josefa Victoriana Modesta Castro y Ortega (SC Baptism 02994). Modesta married Charles William Dana y Carrillo at Santa Bárbara on May 26, 1861.
