María Josefa Victoriana Modesta Castro y Ortega was born at Monterey where she was baptized in the Presidio Chapel (San Carlos) June 19, 1816 (SC Baptism 02994). She was the daughter of soldado José Antonio Castro y Beltrán (born Villa de Sinaloa, Sinaloa) and María de la Merced del Socorro Ortega y Arce (SJB Baptism 00339), married Mission San Juan Bautista May 31, 1813 (SJB Marriage 00500). Her Godparents were her paternal grandparents, Antonio María Castro y ... and Victoria Beltrán y ... She married José Castro y Álvarez at the Monterey Presidio Chapel (San Carlos) on August 12, 1831 (SC Marriage 01012). Modesta died at the home of her son, José Castro y Castro at Alameda and was buried at Campo Santo San Carlos not far from her home (Castro Adobe). After her husband's death in 1860 she never remarried.
