The father of Synni's daughter "Frida" was Alfred Haase, a German soldier stationed in Norway during the WWII occupation of Norway. Haase was a young sergeant in the German Army who arrived in Ballangen, Norway in 1943. Although he was already married, Haase met Synni Lyngstad and wooed her with a bag of potatoes — a rare and valuable commodity in wartime Norway. Synni reciprocated with a gift of whale meat, and the pair struck up a relationship. Haase returned to Germany when the German troops evacuated Norway in 1945.
In early 1947, Synni's mother, Arntine Lyngstad ("Agny"), left Norway with Frida and moved to Sweden for fear of reprisals against those who had dealings with the Germans during the occupation.
