Jake Backman, age 51, hihgly respected and well known resident of Cedar county, died at St. John's hospital in this city of Good Friday, April 19, at 9:45 o'clock following an illness of several weeks. Mr. Backman was conscious up until the time of his death and was able to whisper words of prayer and parting to his children, Dennis and Darleene, and to his relatives who were present with him.

Born at Menominee

Jake Backman was born on the Backman homestead at Menominee on April 5, 1884, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. Henry Backman. His aged father is still living and resides south of Wynot. His mother died 11 years ago September 12 at Wynot.

At Menominee Jack Backman attended the district schools. In 1898 the Backman family moved to the Wynot vicinity and in 1900 purchased the Backman farm south of that place.

Eighteen years ago, September 17, Miss Theresa Hesse became the bride of Jack Backman at the Bow Valley Catholic church, the nuptials being performed by Rev. A. Birnbach. The young couple went to farming east of the Backman place at Wynot and later moved to St. James where they resided for three years.

Moved to Hartington

Seven years ago this spring Mr. and Mrs. Backman and two children moved to Hartington where they created a lovely and modern brick home in the south part of town. They had been enjoying their home, the untiring work of years, but a short time when sorrow came to the Backman household. Following several months illness, Mrs. Backman died, on March 11, 1933.

Mr. Backman was taken ill on the same date March 11 -- two years from the time of his wife's death. He was operated on the following day.

The late Mr. Backman was a lifelong member of the Catholic church and for years was affiliated with the K. of C. lodge of this city. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of Holy Trinity Catholic church.

Leaves Two Children

He leaves two fine children, Dennis, a junior in Holy Trinity High School, and Darleene, a member of the third grade at Holy Trinity School. Since the death of his wife, his sister, Miss Josephin Backman, has tenderly and affectionately managed the home and on his deathbed Mr. Backman requested that Josephine care for the children. "Be good" were among the parting words given to his son and daughter.

Requiem high mass for the late Mr. Backman was read Monday morning at 9:30 o'clock at Holy Trinity Catholic church and the funeral was one of the largest ever held at the church. Relatives and friends were present from all parts of this county, adjoining counties, and out-state.

Pallbearers were six of his nephews; Albin and Cletus, twin sons of Ed. H. Backman, Florin and Gerald, sons of L. J. Backman and Joseph and Dallas, sons of Barney Backman.

Interment was made in St. Michael's cemetery. Rev. B. H. Lordemann, pastor, had charge of the funeral services.

Besides his son and daughter, Mr. Backman leaves his aged father, Henry Backman of Wynot, and 10 brothers and sisters. The sisters are: Miss Josephine Backman of Hartington, Mrs. Andy Faulk of Hartington, Mrs. Bruno Pinkelman of Obert, Mrs. Henry King of Wynot, Mrs. Melvin Rossenbach of Fremont, Mrs. Pauline Wagers of Sioux City and Mrs. A. T. Duman of Sioux City; surviving brothers are: Ed H. Backman of Wynot, L. J. Backman of Wynot and Barney Backman of east of Hartington.
