Albert Phillip Schmalz, age 74, of Montrose, passed away Wednesday morning, Apr. 11, 2012 at his home. Albert was born Nov. 27, 1937 to Manuel and Irene (Scheetz) Schmalz in Delta, Co. He spent his childhood on the farm on Ash Mesa in Delta and graduated from Olathe High School. Albert married Carole Ann Hale on Aug. 15, 1959 in Montrose. Albert worked with the City of Montrose, retiring from the City after over 20 years of service. He loved the outdoors and the mountains. A good time was often spent camping and fishing. Albert enjoyed working with his hands. He spent many hours doing woodworking and building. He will be greatly missed by his family and grandchildren.

Surviving family members include his beloved wife, Carole of the family home in Montrose; sons Don (Caroline) Schmalz of Peyton, Co., Steve (Bobbie) Schmalz, and Brian (Alisha) Schmalz all of Colorado Springs, Co; one daughter Cindy (Pat) Wigley of Blue Springs, Mo; brothers Joe (Mary Ann) Schmalz, Frank (Cindy) and George (Marie) Schmalz, all of Grand Junction, Co: sisters Millie (Tom) Sinner of Delta, Co., Marti (Dwight) Serfoss of Cortez, Co., Mary Hovis, Marge (Rick) Radebaugh, and Teri (John) Baviere all of Grand Junction, Co; three granddaughters, eight grandsons; one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson. Albert was preceded in death by brothers, Sonny, Mike, David and Tim Schmalz and his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, P.O. Box 1804, Montrose, Co. 81402 or a Memorial Park Bench for Riverbottom Park, c/o of Crippin Funeral Home, 802 E. Main St., Montrose, Co. 81401. A Memorial Service in celebration of Albert's life will be held on Saturday, Apr. 14, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church. The Service will conclude at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Co.
