Rites Will Be Held Monday For One Of Minster's Oldest Residents
Mrs. Mary Berning, aged 78 and 10 months, one of Minster's oldest and best-known residents, was claimed by death in the family residence at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Her death, which was attributed to complications, came after a two-year illness.
Born on the farm three miles west of Minster, which is now owned and operated by Louis Schmiesing, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Anna (Poeppelman) Schmiesing. Her marriage to John Berning took place on May 24, 1882.
For 30 years after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Berning resided on the farm east of St. Patricks, now operated by Leo Bensman. They moved to Minster in 1911, and since that time have lived on Frankfurt St.
Surviving are the husband and three children, Mrs. Ann Plas of St. Patricks, Clem Berning at home, and Mrs. Bernadine Plas of St. Patricks, There are six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, Mrs. J. B. Friemering of Minster is a sister. Three children died in infancy.
A lifelong and faithful member of the Catholic church, Mrs. Berning was enrolled in the St. Monica Married Ladies' society at the St. Augustine parish. She was a member also of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Funeral services have been arranged for Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Augustine church with Rev. Theodore Koenn officiating. Internment will be made in the parish burial ground.
