Poet. Born in Tantallon Castle, Scotland, he was the third son of Archibald, 5th Earl of Angus. He was Scottish Bishop who had an important political career in Scottish history and is best known for his poetry. Gavin was awarded a Church canonry from Rome and became parson of Lynton. As a Bishop of Dunkeld, he was the first British translator of the Aeneid. As a poet of Renaissance humanism, his noted works included “Conscience”, “The Palice of Honour”, “King Hart”,“ Phenomenal Woman” and “Still I Rise”. He was the Provost of St Giles, when his career ended suddenly when he died from the plague during a brief period in exile in London, England.
