The grim reaper has struck once again in the home of one of our foremost families. And shortened a life a few weeks ago which promised many years of blessed life to come. On Saturday, the 28th of January, Matthias Goeke, the president of the Star Brewing Company, died at 11:40 a.m. at his home located on North Franklin St., of Bright's disease, a kidney ailment after just six weeks illness.

He was born Apr 20, 1843 in Jackson Twp., as the son of John Matthias Goeke and his wife, Mrs. M. Elisabeth on the family farm, 2 miles north of Minster. His father immigrated with his family in 1832 and founded his new family home. The area at that time was not economically viable, even though many of Minster's current residents that settled there, and the young Goeke had little opportunity because of that, to get a proper education. Despite that, he had lots of energy and diligence from a young age, and made up for his lack of education in later years. He worked on the family farm, and later on for his brother Henry Goeke. As farm equipment was invented and brought onto the farm, the forward-thinking Matthias Goeke, with his natural business sense, saw the opportunity before him and took over the agency and the sales of agricultural machinery for various companies. After a few years, he opened a sales office of such machinery in Minster. He was in this business about 15 years and highly successful. Because of that, he had a circle of acquaintances from all over the state, especially in the northwestern and southwestern parts of the state, and also amassed a large fortune. He invested part of this money in the new Star Brewing Company in Minster as well as other enterprises and was the president continually for the past 20 years at the brewery, and because he had such a large circle of acquaintances, he built a large customer base in the state.

Meanwhile, his business acumen drew the attention in wider circles, and he was often approached about public matters in Minster and Auglaize County, and was asked for his advice, which he willingly gave. He was also ready to advise or assist individuals to whom he believed he could be of service.

Mr. Goeke was married four times. From his first marriage, which he entered into with Bernadina Ruemping on Oct 6, 1864 came four children, Elisabeth, wife of our mayor Bernard Sherman; Henry J. Goeke, of Wapakoneta, our new Congressman; Friedrich (Fred) Goeke, vice-president of the Star Brewing Co.; and Mary, wife of Anton Behrns of St. Marys. Another son of that marriage, John, predeceased his father at age two.

In the second marriage, he entered with Katharine Meyer, and the only son produced from the marriage is John M. Goeke, Director of the Krain Mfg. Co. in Wapakoneta.

His third marriage with Mary Pleiman produced a single son, Robert Goeke, head of the Tampa Telephone Co. of Tampa, Fla.

The fourth marriage to the surviving widow, Philomina Borgman, remained childless, whom he married Feb 16, 1887.

Matthias Goeke went to his sickbed approximately six weeks ago with an attack of the flu. It was hoped he would recover and regain his strength because he was such a hearty young man. Then in the middle of last week, he took a turn for the worse and on Thursday, he died an untimely death as was confirmed by the doctors caring for him.

His children, who learned of his condition, rushed to his side and arrived to say their goodbyes, with the exception of Robert, who lived too far way to come in before his father's passing. He took his last breath surrounded by his numerous family members and given last rites on Saturday, Jan 28. He died a the age of 67 years, 9 months and 8 days.

As high as the esteem of his fellow citizens, so low was the deep and honest sadness which his death caused that day, as the news of his death raced through the city and the general news of his funeral spread. Despite stormy weather, a great number of friends and relatives attended the funeral which was held in the St. Augustine Church and burial in the St. Augustine Cemetery on Tuesday, Jan 31, 1911. Among the mourners, we saw Chas. Kahn from Wapakoneta, Mrs. Nicholas from there, Mr. and Mrs. Lange from Piqua, Mrs. Mary Rothring, and Miss Mamie Otting, from Dayton, Anthony Rathweg, Tony Strider and J. Birkemeyer from Coldwater, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Goeke from Wapakoneta, Anton Behrns with family from St. Marys, Robert Goeke from Tampa, Fla., Mr. and Mrs. Borgman from Cincinnati, Matthias Sherman from Columbus, Miss Bernie Sherman from Lima, Hy Wesert, J. Haus and Mrs. R.B. Anderson from Wapakoneta, amongst numerous delegations from surrounding towns and villages from Auglaize County and the surrounding counties.

The pall bearers were George Van Dos, A.A. Ley, Louis Wiener, Theo. Kempfer, and John Dorthren. The Boniface Support Society and the St. Augsutine Orphan Sociwty of which Mr. Goeke was a member, followed the casket in the processional, as well as officials of the Star Brewing Co.

Mr. Goeke was known for his noble and manly characteristics, of his high moral standards and religious nature, his great business acumen and practical business sense, his friendliness in neighborly relations, and his strict honesty in business, generally honored and beloved and his death has left a hole, not only in his family circle to whom we express our sincere condolences, but also in our community in which he played an important role in its growth and development, and whose counsel and participatory support of future projects will be missed. Now he has found well-earned rest in our town's cemetery, among his childhood friends, and accomplices of building Minster, under the whispering oaks may he find eternal rest and holy peace.
