Evelyn Benz
Evelyn Mae Benz, 79, of Burlington, died at 9:48 a.m. Saturday, July 9, 2005, at Burlington Care Center in Burlington.
Born Aug. 19, 1925, in West Burlington, she was the daughter of Edwin Martin and Thelma Boyer Dey Keener. She married Donald A. Benz. He died Feb. 27, 1998.
Mrs. Benz worked as a cook at the depot. She also worked at the Burlington schools, at Lincolnville Motel, at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and Eiben Inn.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and the genealogy society. She enjoyed sewing, flower and vegetable gardening and quilt-making.
She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Heckenberg of Burlington; six sons, Terry, Roger, Kevin and Darren Benz of Burlington, Charles Benz of West Burlington and Randy Benz of Mount Pleasant; 27 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren; four brothers, Jack Keener of Burlington, Joe Keener of Cocoa, Fla., Charles Keener of Frederick, Colo., and Rex Keener of Titusville, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one sister, one daughter, one son and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Prugh's Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mrs. Benz will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with Brother Tom Robertson officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
