March 24,1937-Jan 2,2014

Samuel J."Sam"Kline, Jr., passed away peacefully at his home on January 2, 2014. For over nine years, Sam fought leukemia. His funeral services will be held January 7, 2014 at Faith Lutheran Church in Gering. Interment will follow in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering, with Military Graveside Rites provided by the Nebraska National Guard Honor Squad. Sam was born on March 24, 1937, to Clara(Leu)and Samuel J. Kline, Sr., in Alliance. He was baptized into the Christian faith on April 11, 1937, and confirmed in the Lutheran Church (MS) on April 11, 1952. Sam grew up in Alliance and graduated from AHS in 1955. In 1958, Sam enlisted in the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1961. On December 10, 1961, Sam was united in marriage to Mary Lou (Reno) and they were blessed with three children, Christine, Claire and Tim. They have resided in the Gering area since 1962 where Sam worked for many years in the grocery business. He had a great work ethic and a quick wit with a joke for almost any situation. When asked how he was, Sam's favorite response was, "Super good and getting better."From an early age, Sam enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and watching sporting events. For hours, he untangled fishing line while teaching his children the joy of fishing. Laughter abounded when a table of family or friends played card games with Sam. He also had a wealth of knowledge about football, basketball, and baseball.
Sam was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where he served as an elder. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou; children, Christine Kohut, Claire Foster, and Tim (Stacey) Kline; grandchildren, Ashton Foster and Emily Kohut; great-granddaughter, Gracelyn Foster, all of Gering; sister Janice (Gerald) Goetzinger of Martin, SD, and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.Sam was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, C.J. Kohut.
