This is a picture of Raymond Celeste as a Lieutenant. He wears the Infantry Branch Insignia of Crossed Rifles (muskets). Sewn on his upper left sleeve is the Tab of a Ranger-qualified soldier. Above his left breast pocket are basic paratrooper wings. The backing behind the wings indicates assignment in an Airborne unit. The shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) below his RANGER Tab is the 82d Airborne Division. An Infantry Blue Cord runs under his right epaulette. The French Croix de Guerre Fourragère earned by the 82nd Airborne Division in WWII is seen under his left epaulette on his Army Service Blouse. Indistinguishable above the Rifles is the Infantry Regiment designation of one of the Regiments in the 82d to which he was assigned (Airborne Battle Group of the Pentomic Organization of 1957).

This is a picture of Cadet Raymond Celeste Jr. He was a 1956 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. His Cullum # is 20913. His biographic entry in the USMA AoG REGISTER of Graduates and Former Cadets reads as follows: B-NY: A-NG: Inf: 10 SFG 60-62: TIS 63: OCS TIC 64 (CM): MACV 65: KIA-Vietnam 22 Nov 65 MAJ (BSM-PH) (psth): Ob-Fa67.
Translation: Raymond Celeste Jr was born in New York. He received his appointment to the U.S. Military Academy from the Army National Guard. He selected Infantry and received his commission as a 2LT in that Branch upon graduation on 5 June 1956. He had an assignment with the 10th Special Forces Group from 1960-62. He was at the Infantry School, Fort Benning, GA in 1963. He probably served as a Tactical Officer (TAC) at Officer Candidate School (OCS), the Infantry Center (TIC), Ft Benning, in 1964. He received an Army Commendation Medal (CM) during that assignment. He deployed overseas to Southeast Asia for a combat tour and was assigned to the Military Assistance Command Vietnam in 1965. He was killed in action in Vietnam on 22 Nov 1965. He was a Major at the time of his death. He posthumously received the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
