Heinrich was born on Christmas Day, 1857 in West Prussia to Sievert and Sara (Franz) Tiahrt.

He married Emily Wiebe, and they were blessed with two sons and three daughters: Helene Wiebe, Wilhelm, Albert, Conrad (buried in Omaha, Nebraska) and Emilie.
