Clem Matthew Rzepka

SOUTH BEND - Clem Matthew Rzepka, 87, passed away at 8:00 am Friday, January 24, 2014, at his home after a lengthy illness. Clem was born February 23, 1926, in New Carlisle, IN, to the late Walter and Josephine (Jurgonski) Rzepka.

On May 29, 1949, Clem married Elaine (Geabler) Rzepka; she preceded him in death on October 6, 2010. Clem was also preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew Rzepka from Bowling Green, KY; brothers, Hanrick, David and Bernard; and sisters, Clara, Irene and Henrietta.

Clem honorably served his country in the United States Army in the 749th Field Artillery Battalion during WW II. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, a Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and a Victory Medal. Clem was a member of Polish National Alliance and parishioner and member of the Ushers Club at St. Stanislaus Kostka, Terre Coupe. Clem worked at Studebaker's, Drewry's, Oliver's ,and retired after 27 years with Uniroyal. He loved farming, gardening, and fishing. His annual fishing trips with his fishing buddies provided a lot of stories and laughter. Clem loved watching sports, especially Notre Dame, the Colts, the Broncos and the Cubs (not so much).

Survivors of Clem include his sons, Samuel (Christine) Rzepka of Bowling Green, KY, and Kenneth Rzepka of Bluffton, SC; and his daughter, Susan (Chris) Coughlin of South Bend; one sister, Adeline Solmos of South Bend; and brother, Norbert (Elaine) Rzepka of Niles, MI; also surviving are three grandsons, Ryan (Shelley) Coughlin, Thomas (Lindsey) Coughlin all of South Bend, and Justin (Leslie) Rzepka of Louisville, KY; and six great-grandchildren, William, Callahan and Noah Coughlin, and Piper Coughlin, all of South Bend, and Lillian and Matthew Rzepka of Louisville, KY.

Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., where a Rosary will be prayed at 2:30 pm. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 am Wednesday, January 29, 2014, in the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed towards American Cancer Society , 130 Red Coach Dr., Mishawaka, IN 46545. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
