Born Jan. 16, 1925, in Metamora to Joseph and Amanda Winkler Durst, he married Shirley Messersmith-Carter on May 20, 1961, in Palmyra, Mo. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Sam of Pekin and Mark of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; two daughters, Mrs. Mark (Sonia) Hess of Pekin and Mrs. Mike (Venisa) Brown of Metamora; three brothers, Jim of Eureka, Wesley of Henry and Jake of Lacon; and three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Bernadine) Fauber of Metamora, Mrs. Don (Evelyn) Westefor of Chillicothe and Mrs. Lawrence (Geraldine) Kenyon of Metamora.
Three brothers preceded him in death.
He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving as a gunner.
He was a heavy equipment operator in construction at McDougal-Hartmann in Mossville for 45 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Teamsters Local 627 in Peoria, where he was the business agent for five years. He was a member of the Teamsters Retirees Club.
He was a former member of Spring Bay Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was a member of Arcadia Avenue Presbyterian Church in Peoria, where he was a former deacon.
Cremation has been accorded.
