1918 – 2000
Alvin J. Ortgies age 81,of rural Anamosa, died Saturday March 18, 2000, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City from leukemia.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2000 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Anamosa. The Rev. Jerry Egel will officiate at the service. Interment will be at Prairie Hill Cemetery, rural Monticello.
Alvin J. Ortgies was born August 29, 1918, at Cass Township, Jones County. He was the son of G. Henry and Frieda Kray Ortgies. Alvin was baptized October 6, 1918, at St. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, Castle Grove. He attended Hickory Grove School in the Cass area. Alvin received his confirmation in 1933 at St. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church. On October 12, 1938 he married Laura Caspers at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Anamosa.
Alvin farmed in the Cass and Castle Grove area of Jones County his entire career. Alvin was on the ASC board for twenty years, served as a St. Paul Council member and was on the cemetery board at Prairie Hill. Alvin enjoyed all that farming had to offer, especially driving his tractor, spraying weeds and mowing his lawn. He also took great pride in helping several young farmers get started in farming.
He is survived by his wife, Laura; two sons, John (Phyllis) of Proctor, Montana, Richard of rural Anamosa; two daughters, Julie (David) Raak of Ryan; Ruth (Dennis) Engelken of Cuba, Missouri; one brother, William of Monticello; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
