Sadie (Zonnefeld) Buteyn, the daughter of Minne and Jennie (Vander Plaats) Zonnefeld, was born at Andover, S.D. on April 10, 1910. She moved with her family to Sanborn at the age of two where she lived her youth and received her education at country school.

She was united in marriage to Henry Buteyn at Sanborn, Iowa on October 5, 1933. Following their marriage, they moved to Wisconsin for one year and then returned to the Sanborn area where Henry was employed as a hired man on a farm. In 1939 they purchased their farm south of Sanborn and made their home there until retiring and moving to town in 1976.

Sadie died at Baum-Harmon Memorial Hospital at Primghar on October 10, 1994 at the age of 84 years and six months.


She is survived by her husband, Henry of Sanborn; her children: John and Lois Buteyn of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kathy Buteyn of Grand Rapids, Mich., Jane and Faynor Brouwer of Rock Valley, Jerry and Carol Buteyn of Sanborn, and Glenda Buteyn of Grand Rapids, Mich.; 13 grandchildren, and one brother, Dick Zonnefeld of Artesia, Calif.


She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and five sisters.

She was a member of the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church, the Loyal Workers, and Ladles Aid. She enjoyed cooking, baking, doing various artwork, and music was an important part of her life. She had been a piano teacher, a church organist, and an accompanist for various vocalists. Sadie will be remembered by her family and friends for her thoughtfulness in remembering people with cards and letters.


Funeral services were held October 13 at the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church, Sanborn, with Rev. Aldon Kulper officiating.


Casketbearers were grandsons: Dennis Buteyn, Jared Brouwer, Terry Buteyn, Jon Brouwer, Jamie Buteyn, Alex Ware, Eric Buteyn; Mark Buteyn and Tim Brouwer.


Congregational hymns were "Jerusalem the Golden," "Not What My Hands Have Done," "By the Sea of Crystal," and "Praise God From; Whom All Blessings Flow." Alvlna Krikke was organist.


Burial was in Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn, with the Sanborn Funeral Home in charge.
