JOHN G. FISCHER
John G. Fischer, age 87, formerly of Verona, died Friday July 22, 1994, in Susquehanna Nursing Home, Johnson City, after a long illness.
He was born August 21, 1906 in Albion, Minn., the son of Nicholas and Regina Wolfram Fischer. Mr. Fischer attended school in Bertha, Minn. On June 8, 1936, he married Gladys Durant in Verona. She died on April 7, 1974. On September 7, 1985, he married Phyllis Weiss in Rome.
Mr. Fischer was a self-employed mason for several area contractors for over 50 years, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of St. John's Luthrean Church, Rome, and served as an elder for several years. He was active in the construction of the church and in the building of St. Olaf's Church in Inlet, NY. Mr. Fischer held several offices in the Lutheran Laymen's League. He was a member of the Verona VFD and served as fire commissioner for several years, He was a trustee of the Verona Cemetery Assoc. Mr. Fischer was involved with the Consolidation of Vernon, Verona, Sherrill Central School He was a member of the Vernon and Verona Senior Citizens and of Bricklayers Union Local 19.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, and sons-in-law, Ruth and Edward Warburton, of Elizabethown, PA., and Shirley Fischer and Jerry Engel, of San Rafael, Ca; four grandsons, John and Paul Warburton and Benjamin and Jesse Engel, two step-daughters, Mrs. Robert (Lila) Mordhorst, of Baltimore and Cornelia Weiss, of Auburn, NY; one step-son, Charles Zingerline, of Vestal, NY; six stepgrandchidren and one step great-grandson.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at the Nunn ahnd Harper Funeral Home, Inc. Interment will be in Verona Cemetery.
