Christian Heppe passed away at his home in Bloomington township, at 8:30 o'clock Wednesday night, at the age of 81 years and 2 days, having been born in Nieder Moellrich, Germany, on January 10, 1840. He has been in poor health for the past three months, suffering with a complication of diseases.

He came to Muscatine in 1857, and lived here until his death, with the exception of one year spent in Peoria, Ill. He served in the Civil War during the four years of the war, and was a prisoner in Andersonville prison for nine months.

He joined the German Methodist church shortly after coming to Muscatine, and was a faithful member, having served in various capacities in the church activities.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Heppe, and four children, Dr. W.H. Heppe of Penrose, Colo., Mrs. Riley Wishart of this city, Mrs. H. J. Lemkau of Chicago, Ill., and Miss Anna Heppe at home, besides nine grandchildren.

Muscatine, Ia., Feb. 1, 1921. Officers and Members, Shelby Norman Post 331, Dept. Iowa, G.A.R.

Comrades - Your committee on resolutions in respect, honor and esteem of our late comrade, Christian Heppe, who departed this life at his home near this city on the 12th day of January, 1921, respectfully submit the following:

That Comrade Heppe faithfully served his country as a volunteer soldier in the ranks of Company F, 16th regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and that he was in the famous Crocker Iowa Brigade, which was successfully engaged in all the great battles of the Western army and that for several months he was confined as a prisoner of war, suffering the torments and torture of starvation in the Rebel prison at Andersonville, Ga.

That he was a highly respected and esteemed member of our post, kind, quiet and unassuming in all his intercourse with his friends and acquaintances and an upright and honored citizen of the community in which he had resided more than a half century;

That we herein sincerely tender to his bereaved wife and surviving sons and daughters our greatest regard and condolence;

That we request publication of these resolutions in the Muscatine Journal and that the same be entered of record in our Post Journal and that our commander be requested hand a copy of the same to the family of our deceased comrade;

That our post charter be draped in memory of our departed comrade, Christian Heppe.
