Paul Knippling was born December 23, 1924, in Chamberlain, Brule Co., SD, to Bennard and Anastacia "Stacey" (Machovec) Knippling. He lived in Brule County until 1930, when he and his parents moved to a ranch in northern Buffalo County.

He attended grade school At Prairie Center and high school in Miller, Hand Co. He loved to read, in fact, he read all the library books at Prairie Center and started on the encyclopedias. He left school to ranch with his father. He received his G.E.D. certificate in 1986.

On November 20, 1948, he married Margaret Ellen (Lobban), daughter of James and Ruby (Fawcett) Lobban of Cedar Twp., Hand County, at Immaculate Conception Church in Stephan, South Dakota.

They lived on Paul's family ranch in Buffalo County, where they raised two daughters and two sons, Kathy, Kay, Karl, and Kenneth. Their youngest son, Kenneth, died October 27, 1991 from cystic fibrosis at the age of 35. Margaret had been Ken's caregiver throughout his childhood.

Paul died September 6, 1995, of lymphoma cancer.
