Margaret was frail and ill for many years and at one point was confined to a TB center in 1921. She was forced to work as a cleaning lady in office buildings in Racine after Robert died. She and her sons sold Williams Shaving Cream and tooth brushes door-to-door in order to keep the family together. In her later years she was blind and had difficulty hearing and was confined to a bed. She outlived five of her eight children.

MARRIAGE: Marriage information from Milwaukee County court house, document number 265401566. This was a civil ceremony conducted by James A. Graves. Witnesses were Matt Heck and James D. Shaw. Bible records indicate that Robert and Margaret were also married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Racine, WI. A newspaper article appeared in the Burlington Standard Democrat which stated, "Robert Heck, of Racine and Miss Margaret Henningfeld, of Milwaukee, were united in marriage in the former city last week by Rev. Theo Meyer in St. Mary's Catholic church".
