He married Clara (LaFontaine).*

*Family bio in "History of Buffalo Co. 1885-1985"
---------------------
Note from Howard's daughter, Celina 4-22-2017:

His wife's maiden name was Claire Lafontaine. He had five children - Celina Marie Knippling; Laura Lee Nelsen; Kitara (Mary Beth) Byerly; Jenny Allen; and Michael Paul Lambert Knippling. Since his death, his kids have produced six amazing grandkids who were greatly cheated of not having Grandpa Howard there to encourage them in naughty pranks on their parents..

He was an electronic engineer by trade, but a computer wizard and aficionado by heart. He was a good man, and one who would have enjoyed everything about the computer revolution, so the thought that he died when it was just starting to take off in the mid 1990's is a source of heartbreak to us kids. He built his own computer in the 1970's, cobbling together parts, including using a tape recorder as a hard drive of sorts.

My dad died December 20, 1995 from a heart attack the day after his 50th birthday. (some obituaries say it was while playing basketball, but it was actually during volleyball at the YMCA in Pierre).

My mom is still alive - she has remarried and is living in Maine now with her husband Kelly (goes by Claire Ryan now, using Kelly's last name).

* PLEASE NOTE:
Knippling family member confirms that Katherine (1963) and Ross (1987) VanBalen were buried in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Stephan, Hyde County, next to her parents, Lambert (1985) & Alice (1970) Knippling and her brother, Howard Lee Knippling (1995).

In 2012, these families had Ross and Katherine moved to St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in Highmore, where his parents, J.J. & Nellie VanBalen, are buried. I can confirm they weren't there yet in July-Sept 2011 when I transcribed and photographed St. Mary's. Lambert and Alice and son, Howard Lee Knippling were moved to St. Placidus (Duncan) Cemetery near Gann Valley in Buffalo County where many more Knipplings are buried.
