Mrs. Helen Uschold passed away at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday evening at her home, 305 N. Kenwood Ave. following a lingering illness.
Helen Miller was born in Nenno, Wis., November 20, 1858, the daughter of Barbara and Christof Miller. She grew to young womanhood at Nenno and on January 20, 1879 was married there to John Uschold. Mr Uschold had purchased eighty acres of land two miles Northeast of Rose Creek and immediately after their marriage they went there to make their home.
Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Uschold, Nicholas, Mathilda, John, Frank and Edward, four of whom survive. John died 31 years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Uschold were pioneer residents of the Rose Creek community and in the early days before there was a Catholic church there they drove with a team and wagon to Johnsburg, a distance of ten miles, to attend mass on Sunday mornings.
They improved and added to their farm until they eventually had a half section of land with buildings on two of the eighties. Mr. Uschold died on December 21, 1902, leaving his wife with small children and a heavy debt on the farm. However, she remained on the farm working the land, paying off the debt and improving it until her family was grown. Sixteen years ago she purchased her home at 305 North Kenwood Ave., and with her son Edward, moved to Austin, leaving her other sons, Nick and Frank to farm the land.
Mrs. Uschold was known for her honesty and industry. She was active in church work at Rose Creek where she was a member of St. Peter's parish and afor a number of years was the president of the Rosary Society. When she moved to Austin she became a member of the Rosary Society of St. Augustine's Catholic Church.
She is survived be her four children: Nicholas and Frank of Rose Creek and Mrs. Mathilda Reding and Edward of Austin; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Hubbard and John Miller of Theresa, Wis., and one sister, Mrs. Mary Thirifay of St. Joseph Mo.
The funeral will be held Friday morning with a short service at 8:30 at her late home, 305 N. Kenwood Ave., and at 9L30 at St. Peter's Church, Rose Creek, Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating, at requiem high mass. Burial will be in St. Peter's cemetery.
