JAMES "JIMMY" DIX

HUNTSVILLE — JAMES "JIMMY" DIX, AGE 100, of the Lexington Center, Huntsville, TX, went to be with his Lord on April 16, 2014.

Mr. Dix was born on January 19, 1914, in Milwaukee, WI, to the parents of Walter and Isabella William Dix.

Jimmy served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and received several citations for bravery in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Oceans. While off the coast of North Carolina, his ship, the Esso Nashville, was torpedoed from under him, AND NOT being able to swim a lick, Jimmy just happened to be on the side of the ship that did not sink immediately. He lost everything but, like he shared with everyone "there by the grace of God, go I." He ended his war time adventures on the Esso Memphis in 1947.

Jimmy kept his love for the sea and the great United States military his whole 100 years.

Jimmy married Edna Berthe Sloan, of Baytown, TX, on February 6, 1942. They were married 70 years, until Edna's recent death in 2012. An Annuitant of Humble Oil & Refining Company, now known as Exxon-Mobile, in Baytown, TX, with 35 years of service.

After his retirement from Humble Oil, he became a proud instructor of the air conditioning & heating department for Lee College in the Huntsville, TX prison system. He retired from Lee College, Huntsville in 1986.

Jimmy was a devoted member of the First Christian Church of Huntsville, where he sang in the choir, was an Elder and chaired many church committees. He was a devoted servant of God and served Him, always, with joy in heart.

Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents, Walter & Isabella Williams Dix, and his precious wife of 70 years, Edna Dix. Also preceding are his three devoted sons, James Ernest & Walter Eugene Dix, and Eddie Frank Sloan.

He leaves behind to cherish his many memories, daughter Leaila "BOO" Criste Dix Wells & husband, Holley, of Baytown; daughter -in- laws, Norma Sloan of Austin and Mary Lynne Dix of Houston; grandchildren, Darrian Criste Wilcox of Deer Park, Paige Sloan Watts & husband, Mike, of Austin, and Robert Holley & wife, Tracy Ann Wells, of Baytown; great-grandchildren, who they all knew him as the "Great Pa" that he was, Kathryn Sloan & Caroline Sloan Watts of Austin, and Sawyer James & Waylon Holley Wells of Baytown.

WE WILL LOVE & MISS YOU ALWAYS, GREAT-PA!

The family would especially like to thank Ms. Pat Oliphant and her wonderful team of caregivers. We as a family could never have kept the "full speed ahead," as our Daddy called out while heading down the hall, if it was not for Pat and her team providing the fun, loving, sweet and Christian care for Daddy. Thank you.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 21, 2014 at 1:00 PM at First Christian Church in Huntsville, Texas. Interment will follow service at Brooke Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas. Friends will be received at reception following service and interment at First Christian Church in Huntsville, Texas.
