Despite her original Patriot sympathies, she was disowned by the Society of Friends (Quakers) on 5 October 1780 for her elopement with a non-Quaker, Lieutenant Jacob Schieffelin, an officer in the British army.
Mother of nine children.
In 1823, through monetary and property donations, Jacob and Hannah (Lawrence) Schieffelin established Saint Mary's Church at Manhattanville, the first free Episcopal church in America.
