Son of David Humm and Jane Ann Humm, formerly McGowan, of Blantyre, Lanarkshire.
He became a pupil at The Royal Hibernian Military School, Phoenix Park, Dublin.
His brother Robert was also a pupil.
They were recorded in the 1901 Census of Ireland at the School.

He served during World War 1 with his regiment in France at the Battles of Givenchy, Neuve Chappelle, Festubert and Loos.
He was awarded the Russian Medal of St. George, 4th Class.
In December 1915, the battalion arrived at Basra, Iraq, from where they were sent to relieve Kut.
He was killed in action on 21 January 1916, during an attack on Hanna.
He was Mentioned in Dispatches and awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "for conspicuous gallantry in action. He was in charge of stretcher-bearers, and displayed an utter contempt of danger when tending the wounded, often under heavy fire."

died in Archangel, Russia, when part of the North Russia Relief Force. He was one of 240 who died there.
