Maria Meiler, daughter of Anton Meiler and 2. Elisabeth Preuss, emigrated from Germany with her parents and siblings and arrived at the Port of New York on 24 December 1855, aboard the ship New York. The family were early settlers in Johnsburg, McHenry County, Illinois. Maria's future husband was Nicholas Schmitt, the son of Jacob Schmitt, one of the three founders of Johnsburg, in August 1841. Maria and Nicholas Schmitt married on 20 November 1862 at St John the Baptist Catholic Church, in Johnsburg, McHenry County, Illinois. Witnesses to their wedding were Bernard Meiler and Friedrich Schmitt. Maria and Nicholas were the parents of fifteen children: Anton, Elizabeth, Helena, Nicolaus, Gertrude, Katherine, John, Joseph, Mathias Peter, Mary, Rosalia, Bertha, Charles, Frank J. and William H. All except Mathias and Charles lived to adulthood. Their daughter Gertrude was 103 at the time of her death in 1972, son John was 103 at the time of his death in 1975, and daughter Helena was 102 at the time of her death in 1968 ~
