Thanh was born in Vietnam but moved to South Korea in 2006 with her Korean husband. Her son Kwon Hyeok-Gyu was born in 2008, and her daughter Ji-Yeon a year later. She gained Korean citizenship in 2013 - her Korean name was Han Yoonji. Thanh and her family had planned to move to Jeju Island to start a new life on a tangerine orchard.
Thanh's body was recovered on April 23, near the ferry's dining room. She was cremated and her ashes reside in South Korea.
Thanh is survived by her daughter, Kwon Ji-Yeon; father, Phan Van Chay; mother, Nguyen Thi Nga; and sister, Phan Hong Hanh.
