Deceased Name: Robert Wayne Lewis
Funeral services for Robert Wayne Lewis, 79 of Carthage will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Eastside Baptist Church in Gary with Rev. Dale Walker and Dr. P.A. DuBose officiating. Burial will follow in the Gary Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6–8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Lewis passed away May 13, 2014 in Carthage.
Robert Wayne Lewis was born October 23, 1934 in Dallas, Texas to the marriage of Clifton and Mary Springfield Lewis. Robert graduated from Carthage High School in 1953 and later attended the University of Texas and Stephen F. Austin State University where he received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees.
Lewis married Laura Elouise Jones in 1986 and celebrated 28 years together. Robert worked for the Carthage Independent School District for 40 years as a teacher and a coach. He was a longtime member of Eastside Baptist Church in Gary where he taught the Men's Sunday School Class. Robert also worked with the Boy Scout's of America and was camp director at Camp Pirtle during the summer for many years. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Chuck Lewis; and sister, Mary Ann Thomas.
Lewis is survived by his loving wife, Laura Elouise Lewis of Carthage; son, Deron Lewis and wife Julie of Carthage; daughter, Brenda Okuda and husband Eric of Carthage; grandchildren, Blake Carroll and Thomas Dean Okuda; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
