John F. Wagner was born August 24, 1855 at Frank, Russia and died Saturday evening, December 15, 1928 at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 21 days. He spent his early life in Russia and was confirmed by Pastor David. In 1876 he married Mary Katherine Wagner and to this union was born one daughter.

They came to America April 17, 1892 and settled near Geneva, Nebraska. In December of the same year they moved to Culbertson where they have since resided.

Soon after their arrival they united with the German Methodist church and remained a member to the end. He was a very active member in the church, held various important offices and taught in the Sunday school. He was well versed in the Bible and loved to sing the gospel hymns. He was seldom absent at prayer meetings. He rejoined in the work of God's Kingdom upon earth and eagerly watched the construction of Zion Evangelical church.

He leaves to mourn his departure his beloved wife, two brothers, Conrad F. of Culbertson and Henry of Russia; three sisters, Katherine, Barbara and Mary Katherine, all of Russia; one daughter, Mrs. David Gies of Culbertson; two grandchildren, John Gies of Culbertson and Mrs. Glenn Bell of McCook; one great-grandchild, Gladys Bell of McCook and many other relatives and friends. Three brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon in the Zion Evangelical church, Rev. H.C. Hoesch, officiating, assisted by Rev. Seibel of the local Mennonite church. Interment was made in the local cemetery.
