US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the US House of Representatives for four terms, from Wisconsin's 8th congressional district (March 1895 until March 1903) and for two terms from Wisconsin's 9th congressional district (March 1903 until March 1907). At the age of 5, he moved with his parents to Greenfield, Wisconsin where they engaged in farming. Following his service in the Union Army during the American Civil War, he returned to Wisconsin and opened a hardware business. In 1877 he entered politics, serving in the Wisconsin Legislative Assembly on three separate occasions (1877, 1881, and 1882) and then served in the Wisconsin State Senate from 1883 until 1886. In 1894 he was elected to the US House of Representatives, defeating incumbent Democrat Lyman E. Barnes. In 1906 he was not re-nominated for a fifth term and he returned to Wisconsin to pursue farming interests and local politics.
