Ella Bahr died late Sunday evening, June 29, 2014, at St Francis Hospital in Topeka, Shawnee county, KS. She had only been ill for a few days when she was suddenly stricken and died. Her death was unexpected as she had been in good health throughout her life.
Ella was born to Gladys (nee Walker) and Louis Baker on Saturday, October 26, 1935, in rural Phillips county, KS; she was their sixth child (of eight children) having twin sisters who had preceded her in death. During her early childhood, her family lived on the farm. When she was older, they moved to Logan, Kansas. There she graduated from Logan High School. The class prophecy for her would be that she would become a tobacco auctioneer; as these prophecies were made in jest it was the furthest from the truth. The Senior Class trip that year was to visit Topeka, where a (1951) flood had ravaged much of the city recently. Ella would later move to Topeka to continue her education to become a nurse.
Ella married Rex R Bahr, son of Sylvia (nee Baker, no relation) and Ora Bahr of Nebraska. They were married on Saturday, Feb. 11, 1956 near her mothers home in Logan, KS. The wedding had a Valentine theme being so close to Valentine's Day. They had a heart-shaped cake with heart decorations. No honeymoon was had as her new husband had to return to Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, KS where he was stationed as an airman.
They settled into married life at 2900 East 3rd in Topeka, KS. They would have three children; Ann, Ron and Von. Her life was not without tragedy as Von had become very ill before he was two. It was thought at first it was just a cold or flu, but when he slipped into a coma he was taken to the hospital. The doctors were unable to diagnosis what was wrong with little Von as it was nothing that they had seen before, so Von was put into an oxygen tent and isolated from the other patients. Because of the unusual situation of not knowing just what Von had, isolation required specialty nurses who worked on special cases just for Von. Ella stayed with her youngest child and would not leave his side, the nurses set up a bed for her in Von's room, where Ella slept every night. Rex would go visit in the evenings, but because of the young ages of Ann and Ron; they would be left in the truck.
Von had been in the hospital a week when the nurses were finally able to convince Ella to go home and rest, but it was not to be. As soon as Ella reached home, the phone rang; it was the hospital notifying them that Von had passed away. This haunted Ella the rest of her life, would Von have lived if she had just stayed by his side?
Ella and Rex adopted their grandson Jason Curtis Bahr in 1976. Ella did not work anymore but stayed at home to take care of Jason, though in the early years of their marriage she had to work as a key-punch operator to be able to support their family.
Ella and Rex were divorced Sept. 29, 1998.
Ella was diagnosed in 2000 with cancer and had chemotherapy, she was declared cancer free in 2005. The cancer did return eventually but she would not allow it to stop her life. She enjoyed babysitting her grandsons and watching their ball games as well as visiting family and friends. She enjoyed life, but she was tired, she was the last living member of her immediate family as her parents and all of her brothers and sisters had died before her. She leaves behind son Ron, daughter Ann; grandson Jason, and two great-grandsons Brett and Preston; all of Topeka, KS. Services for her were on July 1, 2014 and she was laid to rest next to her son Von. She was ready to be God's Angel and looked forward to looking out after her family even after her death.
