Carolina was born in West Prussia, November, 1862. When about 22, Lina married Gustav Herbert Jantz (Jans) c. 1884. They were living in Marienwerder, Prussia when they decided to emigrate to the U.S.A. Together they sailed aboard the Veendam to New York City, arriving on Nov. 13, 1893; stating their intended destination as Toledo, Ohio.
They lived out that intention remaining in Toledo the rest of their lives.
Together they had three children. Son Conrad was born just about four months after they stepped on American soil, in 1894. Son Otto was born three years later; daughter Frieda was born in 1901.
Sadly, Gustav, Lina's husband of 32 years, died in 1916 at age 62. She was a widow for the remaining 26 years of her life, relying on her children in part for her livelihood.
Lina told the 1940 census-taker that she had finished fifth grade in Germany (by this time, Marienwerder, West Prussia was part of Germany).
Lina passed away in October, 1942.
