Merle M. Meier grew up near Long Lake, attended school in Long Lake and graduated from Leola High School.
In September 1952 he entered the US Army and was stationed in Kentucky and Maryland. He was discharged from the army in September 1954.
He was united in marriage to LaVina Albrecht on Dec. 26, 1952 at Salem Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Long Lake, SD.
He was a salesman for IHC dealership in Long Lake.
He was appointed Long Lake Postmaster and held that position for 34 years. In 1956 he started his Buffalo herd and had that until April of 2003 when he disbursed his entire herd do to his poor health.
He was a member of Salem Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Adolph Schumacher American Legion Post #276 of Long Lake, Long Lake Rural Fire Dept., Long Lake Band and Choir. He was a past member of the National Buffalo Association.
His father and one sister, Kathleen Munsch preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of Long Lake, his mother of Eureka, two daughters, Josie Tarnutzer, JoAnn Meier and one son Carl Meier.
