Dominic (Domenico) Fulco was born to Rocco and Saveria (Carbone)Fulco in the tiny village of Sitizano di Cosoleto.Dominic and his immigrant family came to the United States in stages between 1902 and 1912.His father,Rock, being the first to make the voyage in 1902 was soon followed by the 2 eldest sons, Joe and Ralph, where they labored in the coal mines of West Virginia and Pennsylvania before permamently relocating by 1910 to Bay City, Michigan. Dominic and his sister Mary were the last to arrive in November 1912.Although the family never questioned the decision to leave their native land life was very difficult and everyone worked in menial labor jobs. When the United States entered WWI, Dominic, as an alien resident, registered for the draft. It was a way for aliens of the time to be awarded their citizenship. What is known is that Dominic was struck by a shell in the back of his head while driving an ambulance on the battlefield during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. This happened just north of the village of Cierges about 3 weeks before the Armistice of November 11, 1918.Dominic is one of more than 14,000 interrments at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery just a few miles north of where he fell. Dominic's death was the greatest tragedy to befall his parents and siblings. He left behind no widow nor children. This administrator was the first of his family to make the long journey to his gravesite on March 8, 2011.There are no words to adequately describe the beauty and tranquility of this cemetery which is maintained by The American Battlefield Monuments Commission.
