Son of Johann Engelbrecht and Anna Bezold.

He was born Johan Karl Bezold in Unterschrenz, Bavaria (today spelled Unternschreez) which is mostly a Protestant village near Bayreuth. His parents married in 1869 and his last name became Engelbrecht. He immigrated from Germany via Antwerp in July 1893 on the ship Friesland.
