G. Harry Roth Dies Suddenly
G. Harry Roth, 70, prothonotary of Adams county from 1916 to 1924 and long active in the republican party here, died suddenly at his home in Gettysburg at 10 o'clock Saturday morning of a heart attack.
Although Mr. Roth had complained of illness for some time, he arose Saturday apparently in his usual health. Shortly before 10 o'clock, he told Mrs. Roth that he felt tired and believed he would go to bed.
He went upstairs, undressed and lay down in bed where he was stricken, death ensuing before the arrival of Dr. Edgar A. Miller, who was summoned. Mrs. Roth was with her husband at the time he passed away.
Born in New Oxford
Born in New Oxford, a son of the late Elias and Sara (Shane) Roth, Mr. Roth was a carpenter and later a contractor and builder for a number of years, moving to Gettysburg in 1918.
An active republican for many years, Mr. Roth was first elected prothonotary of Adams county in 1915, taking office in January, 1916. In 1919, he was re-elected, and served until 1924.
After leaving his elective position, Mr. Roth was appointed investigator and appraiser of estates in Adams county for the state auditor general's office in March 1927. He held that position for six years, being succeeded in 1933 by William Gilbert, of New Oxford.
Spanish War Veteran
For a number of years, Mr. Roth served as a republican county committeeman, both in Gettysburg and New Oxford, and later served as county chairman of his party.
The deceased was a veteran of the Spanish-American war, having been a sergeant in company M, which was recruited locally.
In his younger days, Mr. Roth was a semi-professional baseball player, playing for teams in the old Cumberland Valley league. He was an infielder, generally playing third base. His interest in baseball never diminished with the passing years and he was well informed on the major league teams.
Mr. Roth was a member of Trinity Evangelical-Reformed church here. Fraternally, he was a member of Hebron lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, New Oxford, and the Improved Order of Red Men, New Oxford; the Sons of Union Veterans and Gettys lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Gettysburg.
Funeral On Monday
The deceased is survived by his widow, whose maiden name was Miss Elizabeth Wolf, a native of New Oxford; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Shoap, Arendtsville; Mrs. Mabel Zahn, Westminster, Maryland, and Mrs. Hermie Bowman, Camp Hill; one son, Arthur E. Roth, Gettysburg, assistant cashier at the First National bank of Gettysburg, and by three sisters, Miss Jennie Roth and Mrs. Annie Miller, both of New Oxford, and Mrs. Randolph Wehler, Washington, D. C.
Funeral services Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Bender funeral home, Carlisle street, the Rev. Howard S. Fox, pastor of Trinity Reformed church, officiating. Interment in the New Oxford cemetery.
The pallbearers were Clayton F. Palmer, S. L. Allison, Jesse E. Snyder, William I. Shields, Harry Koch and Attorney William L. Meals.
