Eva was born in Marienberg, Glueckstal, Odessa, S. Russia to Immanuel and Elisabeth (Wolff) Schock, where she grew up, attended school and was confirmed. She came to the USA with her brother-in-law and sister, Friedrich and Elisabeth (Schock) Stugelmeyer, arriving in New York in 1889. After her arrival, she lived five years on a farm near Eureka, where she most likely first met Johann "John" Hertel.

On 1 July 1894, Eva married John in McIntosh Co., N.D. To this couple were born nine children. They lived on various farms in the Java/Anamoose/Ashley, N.D. area. In 1917, they moved to Corson Co., S.D., settling on a farm 11 miles north east of McLaughlin, and farmed there until 1934, when they retired and moved into McLaughlin.

Eva was an excellent midwife, and in demand for many miles around, and a devout Christian, with a great deal of Christian wisdom. She was born with a deformed hip as the result of intermarrying, and because of that, preached avidly against marrying too close within one's relationship, but she never let her hip slow her down, and she had a most delightful sense of humor. Many wonderful stories could be told about her.

Eva died in the McLaughlin Community Hospital after a week of illness. Funeral services were held at the United Brethren Church in McLaughlin, Rev. G. Moritz officiating. Burial was in the United Brethren (Congregational) Church Cemetery.

Surviving her are her beloved husband, John; five sons: Frederick M. and Christian, both of McLaughlin, Emil, Dupree, S.D., August and Henry, both of Isabel, S.D.; three daughters: Eva (Christian) Hoff, Valley City, N.D., Rose (John) Gross, Dupree, S.D. and Lydia (Henry) Speidel, McLaughlin; 75 grandchildren and 56 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter: Amelia, who died in infancy; all of her siblings, including four brothers: Christian E., Emanuel, Johannes and Georg S., all Schock, and four sisters: Elisabeth (Friedrich) Stugelmeyer, Magdalena (1. Johann Georg, 2. Christian J.) Biederstedt and Fischer, respectively, Dorothea, who died in infancy and a stillborn sister.

Eva will be greatly missed.
