In loving memory of Carl Cain, age 81, who passed away unexpectedly Jan. 13, 2002.

He was a longtime resident of Valparaiso, Fla., and owner of Cain's Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Inc. He left a legacy of family and friends who will always remember and cherish "Grandpa." Grandpa leaves behind a host of children, grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Carl was born in Geneva County, Ala., on April 6, 1920. He was raised in the Pond Creek Community. He enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) on July 6, 1939. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in June 1941, where he faithfully served until the end of World War II. Carl reenlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1947 at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. After his discharge in 1949, he continued as a civil servant in civil engineering at Eglin Air Force Base.

He retired from civil service in 1978 and opened Cain's Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Inc. in Niceville, Fla. - his lifelong dream. He was a loyal sponsor of the Niceville/Valparaiso softball league - where his granddaughters still play.

Carl was one of the founding members of the First Baptist Church of Valparaiso and remained active in the church. He was a proud member of York Rite of Crestview and the Scottish Rite and Hadji Temple of Pensacola, Fla., and the Fort Walton Beach Shrine Club. He was a past president of the Hadji Bandits parade unit. He was also a 32nd degree Master Mason of Okaloosa Lodge 312. He was also a member of AMVETS and Elks Club of Valparaiso.

Carl leaves behind his sons, Colin of Delmar, Dela., Conrad of Lancaster, N.Y., his wife Karen and grandchildren, Justin, Jason, Catlin and Carson; daughter, Delores and Ellis J. (Bonzo) von Haven of Niceville and grandchildren, Cassandra of Columbus, Ga., and Joshua and Tahnee of Niceville. He has one great-grandchild, Dalton, who resides in Columbus; son, Kenneth Brian and wife Debora and granddaughter, Denise and grandson, Aaron Carl Cain of Niceville; along with many nieces and nephews and many longtime friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Robert and Dovie Cain of Chattahoochee, Fla., and his wives, Johnny, Laura Bell and Hazel; his brothers, Shellie and Roy; and sister, Imogene. He is survived by his sister, Pearl Dunaway of Sneads, Fla.; and brother, Randall Cain of Winter Garden, Fla.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Valparaiso with the Rev. Arnold Henndrix officiating. Graveside services will be held at Beal Memorial Cemetery in Fort Walton Beach.
Pallbearers will be his grandson, Josh Day, and the Bandits of the Hadji Temple.

Grandpa was known for his honesty, integrity and hard work. He was a devoted family man and a blessing to those who knew him. He was an avid fisherman. Grandpa, we know you are in a place now where the river runs deep and every day brings a new fishing tale. We also know that you are taking care of family members who have passed on, and on any given day they will have "Grandpa" ready to go fishin' and show 'em how it's done. From the grandkids ... We'll always keep you in our hearts. We love you dearly and will miss you deeply. Our memories of you will never leave and you will always be on our minds and in our hearts. You will never be far away. We will always have you in our hearts. His passing leaves a great void in the lives of his family and friends. Take care, Grandpa, and know that there is an empty spot for us down here right now. But one day we'll all be together again.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners' Childrens' Hospital.
