Christian Hofer
It has pleased the Lord of life and death to take out of this life Christian Hofer, a life-long and honorable citizen of this community. He was born in Asch Wuerthemberg, Germany, January 8, 1835, and was baptized four days later, on the eleventh of January. He came to this country in his early youth.
On the second of May, 1852, at the age of seventeen, he was confirmed in the St. Thomas Lutheran Church of this town by Rev. Heinrich Cordier, with a class of sixteen members.
November 3, 1859, he was united in holy marriage to Christina Lohrey. This union was blessed with seven children, three of whom preceded their father in death. Those living are: Friedericka Bohlander, Katherine Weileman, Ernst Hofer and Eva Altherr.
Father Hofer took sick on April 4th; the physician pronounced it bronchial pneumonia. The end came Palm Sunday morning at 2 o'clock. He therefore reached an age of 81 years, 3 months, and 8 days. A good old age, indeed, pointing to the fulfillment of the promises of God's Holy Law, "That it may be well with thee and thou mayest live long on the earth".
"Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made;
Our times are in His hand Who saith:
A whole I planned,
Youth shows but half; trust God: see
all, nor be afraid."
He leaves a widow, Christina Hofer, four children, eighteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
'Thy day has come, not gone:
Thy sun has risen, not set;
Thy life is now beyond
The reach of death or change.
Not ended, but begun.
O noble soul! O gentle heart!
Hail, and farewell!"
