Chief of Siksika (Blackfoot) First Nation. Chief Crowfoot was instrumental in helping maintain peace between First Nations and the Canadian government. He paved the way for the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway across western Canada. He was made Chief of the Big Pipes band in 1865 and one of three head chiefs of the Blackfoot tribe in 1870. He supported the North West Mounted Police in stemming the illegal alcohol trade to native communities and he enacted rules to end tribal warfare. He was responsible for the Blackfoot signing of Treaty Seven which allowed Canada to acquire the land needed to build the transcontinental railroad. Crowfoot died of tuberculosis at Blackfoot Crossing, and was buried at the site where Treaty Seven was signed. In 1948 a stone cairn was erected there to his memory. Chief Crowfoot was inducted into the North America Railway Hall of Fame in 2008.
