Gustav Hintermeister was born in Zürich, Switzerland on March 30, 1852. Little Gustav was orphaned at the tender age of 3.

In 1875, Gustav Hintermeister left Switzerland and sailed for America -settling near Andalusia, Rock Island Co., IL.

On February 18, 1878, Gustav Hintermeister married Anna Schneider, daughter of Johann (John) Schneider and his late wife, Christina Stuke. They bought a small farm.

Gustav and Anna became the parents of 9 children, born within 15 years.

John was born in 1879.
Next came Lucy -1880
Albert - 1882
Mary - 1884
Rosa - 1886
Gus - 1888
Julia - 1889
Anna - 1891
and Nellie - 1894

The first picture of Gustav and Anna's family was taken about 1891. (It should be noted that two more little girls (Annie and Nellie) were born in the years following this picture.) Though Gustav had brown hair, he was especially fond of his red beard.

The second picture is taken in front of the family's one story home. This picture was likely taken around 1900. A traveling photographer may have taken this picture of the family. The 2 oldest sons are not in the picture. The oldest had probably already moved on. The 2nd son was likely working in the fields.

The Hintermeister children worked hard, just like their parents. They also shared many delightful times - together. Naturally, from time to time, they would even get the giggles. One of the sisters remembered that before this 2nd picture was taken, they started to giggle…and their father had to quiet them down. Though they did stop giggling, can you still see a ‘twinkle' in their eyes?}

The last picture of Gustav and Anna's children was taken abt. 1941 - at a Hintermeister family gathering in Rock Island Co., IL. The oldest brother, John, had died a few years before. One of the sisters, Mary, had died at the age of 4.

The last picture is of those attending that same reunion.
