Katherine Bell was born on September 29, 1871, Iin Kukus, a small town on the Volga River in Russia, just south of Saratov. She was the first of four children born to George Philip Bell and Katherine Metzger. Her siblings were Conrad, Katherine Elizabeth and Katherine Margaret. The Bell family was part of a community in Russia known as the Volga Germans. Katherine the Great had invited Germans to Russia in the 1760's. Many Volga Germans migrated to the United States in the 1880's, including Katherine Bell and her husband Adam Metzger, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1903.
