Melvin was the second child born to Paul and Ida Koepke Kiel. He left school after the 8th grade to go to work, training as a stenographer and typist. After gaining employment at the Frost Veneer Factory, he eventually became an accountant. He married Edna Badtke of Door County in 1927, and the couple was blessed with a daughter, Carol, in 1930. Melvin was always a gregarious and industrious man, reveling in family gatherings and household projects. He lived his entire life in Sheboygan, though he enjoyed visiting new places, and died there in 1996.
